Employee Highlight: René de Martin

Employee Spotlight - Rene de MartinFor this week’s blog, we’re excited to highlight our new Area Sales Manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. The role is in PAC’s Process Analytics group, of which CVI is a part.

René de Martin is a long-time PAC employee based in Germany. For the last 12 years, he had been a service engineer for PAC’s Lab Instruments group, primarily focused on elemental solutions. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at ThermoScientific, also working as a service engineer for laboratory products.

Recently, when a sales manager position became available, René quickly applied. “I was looking for a new challenge. I’ve been in service my whole career, and I started to think about what was next, and what I could do different.” It’s the change that is the most exciting aspect of his new position.

“This role,” he continued, “was really appealing because ‘sales’ here isn’t a traditional sales role. We’re in a very technical industry, which means to sell a product, you really have to have a deep understanding of what problems the customer is dealing with and the unique aspects of their process. It requires a ton of questions to really understand what a customer needs. I’m going to need to have a strong focus on the application, which is really a great fit for me.”

René is a chemist by education, and has always been fascinated with problem solving. As a service engineer, he described his role as “always being in the fire, fixing things directly on site.” In this new sales manager position, he will still be solving problems, but the problems will be at a different point in the customer journey.

When asked what he hoped to accomplish in his first year as sales manager for EMA, he noted that he really wanted to visit customers, and that he enjoys traveling. Covid, however, is making that a challenge, as many businesses are restricting sales calls throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. “I may have to rely on virtual calls and webinars for a while,” he noted.

When he’s not working, René enjoys cooking. As a chemist, he likes the elements of mixing and cooking ingredients to create something delicious. The difference between cooking and chemistry is that you can be a lot more creative with cooking and baking, and experiment in new ingredients or different amounts, and if something doesn’t go quite right, it’s not a big deal.

He bakes bread 2 or 3 times a week for his family, experimenting with a different type of bread every time. This hobby started when Germany shut down at the beginning of the Covid epidemic, and has been continuing for the last two years.

In the future, René is hoping to visit northern Europe at the right time to see the Aurora Borealis. He also is hoping to explore some islands in the South Pacific.

If you’re located in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa, René de Martin will be your representative for your viscometer requirements. Reach out to Cambridge Viscosity if you have any questions.
